While breakups are always tough, the worst ones are the ones you aren’t prepared for. Unexpected breakups happen when your partner suddenly drops a bomb on you, saying he’s moving out, or that she’s found someone new.

Luckily, there are signs you can look for to see if your relationship is headed for troubled waters. If it’s taken a downturn, you may be able to work things out and continue, if your partner is game. If not, you will be prepared, and that’s something to be glad about. Here are 8 signs that could indicate that your relationship might be in trouble.
  • Your partner lies frequently.
If your girlfriend/boyfriend starts lying about where she is or who he’s been with, it is a telltale sign that trouble is coming.
  • He/She stops confiding in you.
Remember when he told you about everything that happened during his day? Or when she told you details from her conversation with her sister? These little things you share are part of what makes a steady relationship. You turn to each other and help each other see life clearly. If your partner suddenly stops telling you the little things that are going on, it could be a sign that he or she is emotionally becoming disconnected. It could also mean moodiness or a lot of stress at work. Any of these conditions might justify a little TLC on your part.
  • You start fantasizing about other relationships
If you’re feeling distant and disconnected (enough that your desperate coworker is starting to look attractive), then your partner is likely feeling the same way.
  • Your partner is unusually disconnected.
When you’re together, your partner is usually busy with other things on the phone, checking email or messages, or tuned out with TV or video games. This could be a sign that your relationship is no longer a priority, that he/she is just having a lot of stress lately, or that he or she is taking you for granted.
  • Little things tick your partner off
If small things are causing arguments all the time, it could be a sign that your partner is just not happy with you. It could also mean that your partner is just under a lot of stress, and is just not happy in general. All relationships have their ups and downs, but if your interactions are almost always negative, it’s a sign that something’s off.
  • Your partner seems more interested in others
If you notice she perks up when other guys walk into the room, or that he’s only paying attention to his constant text messages with his new co-worker, it could be a sign of a breakup coming.
  • Your partner’s schedule suddenly changes, leaving little time for you.
Having little time could be due to a change in work responsibilities, but if it doesn’t have any logical cause, it’s a sign that your partner is feeling distant from you. Often, breakups happen gradually, with one partner slowly pulling away. People sometimes volunteer for additional work assignments just to land an easy breakup or take a job assignment out of state to have an excuse to move on.
  • There’s a big drop in physical intimacy
If your partner is repeatedly uninterested in sex, and there’s no obvious cause (a dissertation to write, financial pressure, the death of a parent or close friend, etc.), then you may behead for trouble.
